E3 has been pwnzerd!
Gist of it is, E3 is really getting toned down. Not sure on this, but I believe they were having trouble getting space to hold the giant gaming convention.
Shows them for never inviting me. :D (E3 is invite only)
Also, Michelle from the City 17 forums that I mentioned in my last post, is building my game idea! A new engine is being used, not the GTA one. It'll be freeware, so I'll be sure to post it when its finished.
In the meantime, here is some theme music, and a link to a screenshot of an imposing Rent-a-cop, who bears an ever-so-slight resemblence to Don Knotts...

Good Oldies
Age of Empires 2
Well, this was the game that got me hooked into PC gaming. AoE2 had an easy to use and had
I actually learned alot about history from AoE2, its historical accuracy was very good.
The virtual encyclopedia it came with made it even better. AoE2 may be quite outdated now, to the point where my system can no longer run it, but it was truly an excellent game.
Black & White
This was a very original game that completely shattered the idea of a typical game. Its to bad more games didn't follow the same idea of originality, gaming today might be a whole lot different.
B&W actually got old fairly fast for me though. Also, the whole "Playing God", thing is a bit of a turn off for someone who thinks the way I do, although of course I know its only a game.
Anyway, Kudos for being so original!
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
Okay, so this is barely an oldie, at a still young three years old, but,...meh.
KotOR is a game that was truly fun to play. Made by the Canadian based company, Bioware, KotOR is based years before the Star Wars films and games we are familiar with. It broke new ground by being the very first Star Wars RPG.

Being based so long before the original Star Wars films, so the universe is quite a bit different. However, it still retained that Star Wars feel, making it a really enjoyable experience. This game is fun to load up and play, even now, showing its true value and quality.
The Sims
Well, Sims was really something. It brought gaming to the masses, made it accessible, and was generally, well, fun! It simulated day to life, letting people lead alternate lives, trying different things and allowing there imaginations to grow.
It was sometimes tiresome to have to micro-manage small things in your sims life, but that gave it a challenge. Many hard-core gamers considered it sort of lame, but I believe it was something truly beneficial to the gaming
Its just to bad they over-did the whole expansion pack thing, personally, I think one is too many. If your going to do stuff like that, either put it in the original game, or throw it all together into a sequal, instead of making gamers shell out 20 dollars everytime you add something new.
Well, there you have it, I know that there are many good old games, but alas' I never played many of them. If you have a game you'd like to add, just post it in comments.

Yes, I'm still around
However Leipzig game conference is this week, which has been giving the general public some new info.
First of all we have a new trailer for Half Life : Episode 2, as well as team fortress 2, both available over steam. I can't wait.
Also, I've been spending some time at City 17, a Half Life 2 roleplaying forum, which has been pretty fun. Anyway, I still might bring you a review of Guild Wars: Factions, but I'm probably going to wait for Guild Wars: Nightfall and review that. Its going to have a new system that allows you to have constant companions, called heros, who you can equip, skill train, and customize.
Looks fun!

My Top 5 Oblivion Mods
Alright well, we all know The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is an awesome game, but you have to admit, after you’ve beaten the game and done all the side quests and whatever else you can only raid the same dungeons a couple (hundred) times before you start getting bored. So that’s why I’ve assembled this all star list of mods, that I have found to have slightly increased the time I’ve enjoyed the game. PLUS I’ve even googled up all the links to download these mods! Enjoy!
Cheydinhal Pet shop
Well this one definitely lives up to its name. This mod actually adds a pet shop just outside Cheydinhal where you can buy, pandas, dogs, tigers, and even mudcrabs. These pets level up along with you, and actually become quite powerful. Plus if your pet bites the dust, you can buy one of the pet first aid kits and fix him/her/it right up. Definitely a must have for animal lovers.
http://www.vgpro.com/file/18029_cheydinhal_petshop_v1.7.zip.html
This neat little mod adds a new house to Cheydinhal, as well as a niftly little quest to go with it. Plus, if you beat the quest you get to keep the house. Hooray! Too bad there aren’t any voiceovers for the quest.

Castle Domrose
Okay so this is pretty neat. This mod adds a CASTLE to the game, that you can actually purchase. The castle comes with a smith, a guard, and a whole bunch of other people. But it costs 100,000 gold. Start saving!

Mercenaries
Ever wish you didn’t have to go into those big fiery oblivion gates all alone, or perhaps now, with just your animal companion? Well fear no more, this mod allows you to hire yourself a small army of mercenaries from places like the fighters guild, mages guild, and even the bloated float (after you complete the quest that goes with it). Oblivion doesn’t stand a chance.

Playable Dremora
Okay well, I don’t actually use this mod much, but I thought it was so cool I had to mention it. So pretty much what this does is make your demonic enemies, the dremora, a race you can actually select to play as. They are good with heavy armor.

Half Life 2: Episode 1
Basics: Half Life 2: Episode 1 is what I could best describe as a stand alone expansion pack developed and distributed by Valve Software using there innovative online service, Steam. It is rated M for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language (sounds bad but I think the rating is a bit overblown… there is no gore for one thing, at least as far as I could tell) Mild spoilers through whole review.
Okay so first of all, Half Life 2: Episode 1 is the first in a series following the events in Half Life 2. After the big thing that happens at the end of half life 2 (no need to ruin it). Something strange happens in which it appears as though the infamous g-man gets a bit of what he had coming to him. Shows him for talking in a strange jolted manner, almost as if he is unfamiliar with human speech!
The game is basically a continuation of Half Life 2, directly following the grand finale.
The main idea of episode 1 is Alyx and Gordon try to escape City 17 before the citadel, made unstable by you’re actions in HL2, explodes.
Speaking of Alyx, she is with you almost the entire game. She now offers assistance not only by helping shoot the endless tide of combine, zombie, and antlion (they aren’t your friends anymore D:) enemies, but in many other ways too. She can take the annoying rollermines that once tormented you, and turn them into friendly allies. She will offer useful advice if prompted. At one point she even uses a combine sniper rifle to cover you as you clear a path. All in all, Alyx has been quite well implemented, being neither an frustrating hinderance that you always have to protect or an invincible annoying hint machine.
As far as new content, there isn’t much to be had, except for the new combine zombies or as Alyx calls them “Zombines”. I guess this is to be expected, since all your doing in Ep:1 is going back through a now completely decapitated City 17, but a new weapon or something would have been nice. Ah, well.
As I said, City 17 is now looking worse for wear, ruins are everywhere. Dr. Kleiner has even taken over the giant screens Breen used to broadcast his rather dreary and unpleasant messages. Hilarity. But other then that the environment in general feels a bit tired and lame. I’m ready for the new forest of episode 2!
So pretty much Episode 1 is a good continuation of HL:2, but doesn’t really offer a lot that’s new.

No new games!
Half life 2 Episode 1 (http://ep1.half-life2.com/) will be coming out June 1st so I guess there is always that to look forward to. It will follow the story directly after the events in half life 2.
In the meantime I've mostly been playing Oblivion plus a bit of Age of Empires 3. I've finished the main story and the fighters guild missons, so now I'm just traveling around Cyrodill raiding random dungeons and doing the occainsional quest. Ho-hum.
Heres the site where you can download the trailer for HL2 episode 1

Spore?
So I was doing my usual surf through the interweb through all my favorite sites, when I run across a little video entitled “Spore Gameplay Video”. I vaguely remembered hearing about a little game dominating the show at E3 by Will Wright, the creator of the popular Sims games. Anyway it was a boring afternoon so I figured I had time to watch the half hour video. By the end of it I was simply in awe. I had seen a game that could very well become one of the best and most successful yet.
The premise is completely original. The player creates a creature and evolves it from its starts as a microbial organism, to when your creature grows legs and crawls out of the water, to when it becomes intelligent and you lose control of the single creature, instead controlling an entire tribe of your little creatures, to hopping into a ufo and exploring a galaxy full of other players creatures. But instead of encounters with other peoples creatures affecting there experience there creatures will be AI controlled. So you could blow up your buddies civilization of warrior dolphins but the next time he loads the game up everything would still be normal for him. The game is not an MMORPG in will be single-player with other peoples content instead of stuff pre-made by the devs.
The other important thing about spore is Procedural Generation. Procedural Generation figures out how things should work based on what the player does. Basically that means if you make a bouncing creature with a leg stuck to its head, the game will figure out how it moves, fights, and even dances. For more on procedural generation go here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procedural_generation
The common opinion is that the game will either be released for the Christmas holidays or around April of 2007. Everyone in the Spore community is anticipating E3, when undoubtedly there will be more information released.
Here is the video (you have to turn up the volume a bit to hear Will Wright talking about it.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Basics: Made by
Yay its here! After months and months of anticipation (okay maybe more :D) Elder scrolls IV: Oblivion has finally gotten into my hands. Hooray!
Okay anyway did this obviously highly anticipated game live up to my unfairly high expectations? Well in a word, yes! Except for the graphics which are almost definitely due to my aging machine and the lack of co-op gameplay that I’m sure I heard mentioned somewhere, this game lived up to my expectations completely.
MILD SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!!!
Okay so the story this time around is pretty standard for role playing games. You start off the game as a prisoner in an imperial (human) prison for some reason (I still haven’t found out why yet but I’m not through the game yet) when suddenly the emperor and a small armed escort come into your cell and take a secret exit out the side. It turns out the castle is being raided by assassins and the emergency exit is through your cell. You follow the emperor and his escort out of the cell and proceed to go along with them fighting there way out of the castle. Then the emperor tells you that you are destined to be a hero blah blah blah, gives you an amulet and proceeds to allow an assassin to get him. So now your deep in a conspiracy dealing with a mysterious cult and centering around the opening of gates into oblivion (the equivalent of hell in the game world).
Or instead of following your main objectives you can just travel around the game world (its about 6 square miles in size) doing whatever the heck you want! The game is that complex.
Anyway as far as features Oblivion sports a good handful of them. You can get a horse to ride around, join the thieves guild and go around stealing things, turn into a vampire (not new but still cool), save the world from terror, engulf the world in terror, or have a beer with the local drunks.
Instead of the stat based approach that was in morrowind, the game is now taking a more realistic approach. That means where in morrowind even if your weapon CLEARLY hit the enemy but all you got was that oh-so-infuriating “swish” sound, it will now work a lot more similar to real life. If your weapon hit the target it hit the target.
The game runs fairly smoothly, although I encountered a small amount of lag in the early part of some of the outdoor parts of the game. Load times are surprisingly quick and you don’t have to load the same area twice in a gaming session. That means if you accidentally go into an area you didn’t want to, you don’t have to reload where you were before (unless you started there).
As I mentioned earlier there is no multiplayer in oblivion which was a bit of a downer. But of course there is always a silver lining and had
So all in all Oblivion is a truly excellent game and I recommend it to anyone who has a good enough gaming rig to run it.

Game Idea
Okay I thought for a change of pace, instead of reviewing games I’d show my own game idea that I’ve been throwing around in my mind for a while.
Okay the basic idea is its Grand theft auto reversed. Instead of being a carjacker walking around town and doing missions for the mob and such, your character is a cop. This is an idea that has been tried but never really done properly. It would give gaming a better name and hopefully stop some of the extremists who want to get gaming banned.
I’m not really sure of exactly how this should be done but I have a few ideas. First of all instead of going to gangs to get missions the player would likely go to the police station to get a mission (perhaps different stations for different missions?). Starting off missions would be fairly simple, probably things like domestic disturbances or perhaps arresting a low risk suspect, like a tax evader or something. Later missions may have you taking down a mob boss or even stopping a terrorist attack. Instead of earning money for your missions (money would come in the form of pay checks) you earn something like prestige, get enough and get a promotion. Promotions could earn you things like better squad cars, pay raises, better equipment and more backup.
Backup would work like the gangs available in the latest GTA games. If you needed help with a mission you could go to police station and request help. If you got promoted high enough maybe you would even get a permanent squad to help you, or at lower ranks maybe just a partner that hangs around eating donuts.
But I still haven’t talked about my favorite part of GTA, the part of the game while you simply roam the city doing what you please. This is likely the part of the game that requires the most tweaking. Obviously stealing cars is out of the question, but at higher ranks stealing could easily be changed to commandeering. If you aren’t high enough ranking to do that then perhaps there could be something that allows you to call for another squad car to give you a lift back to the nearest police station. Instead of beating down random people you could watch for people doing just that, then try to capture them. I know this sort of gameplay would keep me busy for hours.
I could go on about other things for hours but I think that this is enough.
So what does everyone think, did I miss anything important? Any suggestions or ideas? Maybe a game company willing to pay me millions for this idea? I guess not :D.
I’m going to be in

The Movies
The movies…where to begin…Well first of all as most people in the gaming community know, Lionhead studios is one of the most original game devs out there. They’ve brought us games like Black and White and Fable. I’m happy to say that The Movies is another excellent game from Lionhead.
At first the game might seem like another [Insert unmilked business here] Tycoon game, just without the word tycoon in it. However, it in fact delivers a very original play experience. Its concept is simple enough, you run a movie studio by hiring actors, building new sets, decorating your studio lot... etc etc. But instead of just managing via a bunch of sliders and numbers you have about as much control over the lot as you can get. These done in a way similar to black and white, but instead of the omnipotent hand you just have the cursor. If you want a star to stop getting drunk and go to film instead of waiting around for them to slowly get up and begin a leisurely walk all the way across the lot, you simply pick then up (by clicking on them) and carry them there.
This is nice because I found that the game already dragged, spending large periods of time dawdling around waiting for a movie to finish shooting or a set to finish being built. There is a fast forward button but coming into the later years (the game spans from the thirties to 2005 although you can continue playing after that) when your movies get longer, I still spent long minutes sitting around with nothing to do waiting for a movie to finish filming.
As a note about the span of the game that I mentioned just now, I have to give Lionhead a hats off about this. There is a radio that is always playing that provides the soundtrack for the game. Apart from the music being good and accurate to the era, there is also a hugely entertaining D.J. who changes from time to time. First its one that hardly knows what hes doing and is constantly reminding us that theater is better then movies, then a D.J. who considers it his sole responsibility to remind us how bad communism is, then a rude and inappropriate, insulting D.J. There is also a time specific events that govern what type of movies sell better, such as the depression making people want to watch comedy movies and so forth.
Now for the information on the movies you make themselves. You can just hire scriptwriters to give you generic movies drawn from a pile of premade ones. But I preferred to use the option that opened up a little later in the game, making my own movies. The basic system of doing this is to select from a massive bevy of customizable scenes and put them together. You can also choose sets, backdrops, weather conditions and numerous other things. The possibilities are endless.
All in all good game that is just a little slow.

Civilization 4
Basics: Developed by Firaxis Games, Published by 2K. Released only for PC (hooray!). Rated E 10+ for violence. It is a turn based strategy game.
Civilization is yet another huge franchise and in fact is one of the oldest, the first game dating back to the early nineties. Civilization 4 is an excellent and entertaining game that has kept me busy for hours. Anyone who is familiar with this game now that it is basically a big souped up board game (as a side note there is also an actual board game based on civilization, I have played it and it is also very good)
The game spans from around 3000 B.C. (when man began settling down and “Civilizing”) to the near future 2050 A.D. The game features 18 different civilizations to be and 26 different leaders, each offering there own advantages to the game.
Many things have been upgraded from civilization 3. There are more than triple the buildings, there are four new kinds of great people and, of course the extra leaders.
The AI is excellent. I really enjoyed learning how to deal with the different personalities (don’t get an open borders pact with Genghis Kahn :D). Yep it would really be an awesome game if it didn’t crash me to the Blue Screen Of Death! Yes the game ever so often decides to critical error and force me to reboot (I have it fully updated as of this post). Granted, it got a little better after I updated my video drivers, but the game still occasionally bugs out pretty bad.
One thing of note that I wouldn’t usually mention is of all things, the soundtrack. I found it very pleasant and varied, one can really tell that there was extra effort put into it and I pays off.
All in all Civilization 4 is a good game that could just use a few more patches

Battlefield 2

Basics: Developed by DICE, publisher EA. It is a first person shooter. It is rated Teen for violence.
The Battlefield franchise is another one that has taken the gaming world by storm. Its original gameplay is the main reason for this although it has decent graphics as well. It is also important to know that in all the games (three with this release not counting expansion packs) multiplayer is the focus and the single player is mostly for practice(the Artificial intelligence is horrible). The game works on a simple concept, two teams fight for control of the map by capturing crucial control points. In addition to allowing killed players to “respawn” at a captured point, whatever team has the most begins draining the opponents tickets. Whichever team runs out of tickets first is the loser. The only other way to drain tickets is every time a person o a team dies they lose one ticket. There are a few variations but this is the core concept of the game.
Battlefield 2 is a mostly solid but somehow disappointing addition to the series. It offers a new commander player who is elected by the other players who gets an overview of the entire field and in addition to being able to give orders to squad leaders can also call in things like artillery strikes and supply drops. This is a great concept but unfortunately most people on the public servers I went to were just doing there own thing and not listening to the commander.
Another new feature is promotions, awards and weapon unlocks. Basically after you get enough points in game you get a promotion and after you get enough promotions you get to unlock a new weapon. Awards are given for performing a certain feat such as blowing up 200 tanks or reviving 100 wounded teammates.
I think I may have just been disappointed in the same way I was with AOEIII, It’s a good game, I was just expecting more. Anyway Battlefield 2 is a good game that is mostly solid and would be a great game to get to get started into the series with.

Age of Empires 3
Before I say anything I should say that this game has some mighty big army boots to fill. The original age games shook the RTS gaming world, and arguably laid the foundation for almost every RTS game since. So now we have Age of empires 3 the long anticipated next installment in the series. Well, it certainly is a solid game with undeniably good graphics and a few new touches. But when it comes down to it just feels like age of mythology with a new coat of paint slapped on, Havoc physics, and a couple new features. Don’t get me wrong its an excellent game, but it really is a bit of a let down.

So about the home city feature. Your home city represents the base of your civilization across the Atlantic (the entire game is based in the new world from its discovery to around when America became independent). The home city system works a little like a character in a Role Playing Game. At the start of the game you select a home city of one of 8 (you can have more then one home city at once). As you go along in the game playing skirmishes and things like that. You get experience for pretty much every action from gathering resources to building to eliminating enemy soldiers. Each time you home city levels up you can buy a new shipment card which are things you can use during a game like extra soldiers or technologies.
As note on the physics engine. Its fairly realistic, buildings explode convincingly and soldiers hit by cannons fly about realistically but I have yet to have had an experience a situation where this affected game play.
Another thing of note is the Native American settlements. There are many different settlements like this of many different types on each map. Building a trade post next to them gives you special technologies and soldiers. This is fairly innovative and offers for some exciting gameplay.
The singleplayer campaign is fairly good. It consists of 3 different time periods all following members of the fictional black family and revolving around the search for the “fountain of youth”. It is a good campaign and will keep you busy for a while.
The multiplayer is good enough it doesn’t offer a lot of new innovations either although the home city feature does carry over to it.
All in all AOEIII is a decent game that doesn’t quite live up to its predecessors.

Swat 4

Okay my first review…
Basics: Swat 4 is a game by Irrational games, publisher Sierra. Its rating is m for mature for blood intense violence and strong language (what do you expect criminals to say when you cuff them???? Nutty fudgekins????). It is a First person shooter.
Swat 4 is a very original game that is pulled off very well. Most games just follow the same fps mold with just a small twist, or even none at all. Well not completely smashing the fps mold Swat 4 manages to bring refreshing game play to a unreflecting genre. The idea of the game itself is fairly simple, you lead a swat team into a situation (psycho hiding in his moms house takes somebody hostage, bank robbery, failed convenience store heist….e.t.c.) and try to Bring Order to Chaos. The means pretty much handcuffing everyone in the area (including hostages so they don’t go running off into the middle of the fight).Sometimes this is easy, you yell for compliance and the suspect will drop there weapon and surrender. Sometimes they will refuse. The latter situation requires quick thinking, you can simply shoot them and at the end of the game have a lower score, or try to use one of the many non lethal weapons at your disposal. Of course using a non lethal weapon means letting your guard down for a split second. Long enough for the suspect to shoot you dead.
Of course your not alone, you have a squad a very capable Swat members always ready to help you out. The command system for ordering them around is quick and easy to use.
The graphics in the game are fairly good, not the best but there enough to give a good atmosphere. Which brings us to my only real complaint about the game. Many of levels, mainly the ones dealing with psychos give you some truly disturbing levels. Of course real SWAT officer have to deal with this but it was still a major downer to have to worry about accidentally loading a horrifying level. Of course it is considered a good thing that irrational games was able to give this such great atmosphere and so I am only telling about these levels so that you can know about them when deciding if this game is worth buying.
As a brief note on the multiplayer mode. It is very well done with orginal modes of play including co-op which substitutes your AI teammates with your fellow players.
In short SWAT 4 is a very good game and I recommend it to anyone who is sick of the same old FPS mold.

Introduction
So hang around for my first review...Swat 4
p.s. In no way am i ever going to review console games. Ever.
